There are seven species of sea turtles and three come to lay their eggs on the beaches of Ixtapa Zihuatanejo; the olive ridley, the smallest of the sea turtles; the leatherback, the largest of them all, with its characteristic skin-covered shell; and the hawksbill turtle, so coveted for its mottled shell.
One out of every thousand turtles reaches adulthood, in each nesting, an average of 80 to 100 eggs are recovered, and each turtle camp cares for 100 nests of which 85% of the hatchlings are successful.
The release of hatchlings is a magical and renewing experience of connection with nature, do not hesitate to contact a certified camp and participate as a volunteer in any activity.

The Whale Research Project of Guerrero has created an identification catalog with more than 300 whale tails; the different coloration, shape and scar pattern of the lower part of the fluke are their fingerprint.
The whale watching season starts on December 15 and lasts until March 20, during which marine fauna observation tours are offered in which, in addition to whales, other large species of the sea can be found: turtles, dolphins and manta rays.
Trained guides have access to a whale watching network, allowing them to work together to find whales and coordinate to give them space.
